Trinidad was discovered in November 1595 by a Portuguese sea captain. When rediscovered in 1775 by Spanish captains, Hezeta and Bodega, a cross was erected and the first Christian service in California history was held. They christened the port La Santisma Trinidad.

During the Gold Rush days of the mid 1850s, Trinidad was the main port of entry to anxious gold miners. Our small port then supported a population of over 3,000 inhabitants. From 1860 to the present, Trinidad harbor has served as a whaling station, a lumber port, and the center for commercial and sport fisheries.

Seekers of treasure have discovered gold, timber, whales, crab, fish, recreation, burls, natural beauty and the good life in Trinidad.
